Good Moanin’ Springfieldians,

Are you stating the New Year out the right way?

You can do that in a number of ways.  Let me make a few suggestions:

  1. Don’t mention to your pastor anything about how that famous team from the north, “The Michigan Wolverines,” lost yet another bowl game and how Michigan State, Ohio State, Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa, Penn State, and Wisconsin– All Big 10 teams won their bowl games.  Remember Hebrews 13:17 says, “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority.  They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy…”  It’s a very good thing and the right way to start the year by obeying God’s Word, so no mention of the Blue and Maize until my crushed heart has had time to heal, that should be around November 24, 2018. (Ask Roxanne what happens on that day.)
  2. Don’t mention to your pastor how the Detroit Tigers stunk this year, traded away almost all their offensive power and will spend years recovering. (See the above-mentioned Bible verse.)
  3. Don’t mention to your pastor how the Detroit Red Wings or Detroit Pistons and their brand new arena, the Little Caesars Arena, still are the same old Wings and Pistons. (See the above-mentioned Bible verse.)
  4. Don’t mention the Detroit Lions for any reason, not in jest, not in sympathy, just act like they don’t exist, that’s how they play and that’s how we should treat them. This past year they tried to implode the old Silverdome Stadium where the Lions used to play. And of course the stadium didn’t fall down and the running joke is the only thing that imploded at the Silverdome was the Detroit Lions. So don’t mention the Lions. (See the above-mentioned Bible verse.)

There are a number of other things you can do to start your New Year out the right way.  Let me share a couple of things I’m going to do.

I am profoundly affected by that verse mentioned above, not “the obey your leaders part,” but that part that says I will give an account of how I have led us as a church.  More than ever I sense this responsibility to lead us as a people and as a church to become what God has called us to be, and I will give an account to the Lord on how well I have fulfilled my responsibility.

To do that, and to start this year the right way, I realize I must be a man of the Word.  Not only will I preach the Word, and not water down what it says, but I will live by it.  As a husband, father, friend, pastor, I will allow the Word to set the course for all of my relationships.  I will love, I will forgive, I will overlook the faults of others – because that’s exactly what the Word says I should do.

I will be a man of prayer.  I can talk about the importance of prayer, and preach about the importance of prayer – but unless I am praying, I will accomplish nothing of significance for the Lord.  I cannot lead us to being the church God has called us to be unless I am a man of prayer.  Please join with me in the 10:02 Challenge.

I will be a man of sacrifice.   I can not ask others to sacrifice and give of themselves for the sake of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ; I can not ask others to give of their time, and their talents and abilities, and their financial resources unless I am willing to live the sacrificial lifestyle God’s Word calls all followers of Christ to live.

I will be a man of the church.   I will love the church, the Body of Christ, and I will strive to overlook the warts of others, even if they can’t overlook my warts.  God has called me to love His Body.  He’s the One that said, “But in fact God has arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.”  Who am I to question how He has put the Body together?

Well, that’s how I’m going to start out the New Year.

How will you start out this New Year?
