Good Moanin’ Springfieldians,

VBS is right around the corner.  And by corner I mean it’s less than a month away. It starts Sunday evening, July 15th at 6:15pm, and I can’t wait!  Are you AMPED up for it?

Are you ready to be used by God to impact the life of a child and perhaps change the whole course of his life?

Now do I really think VBS is that important?  Do I really think it can change the course of a person’s life?

Yes, I do.

I was talking to my brother some time ago and he told me a great VBS story. They were having VBS at his church some years ago now.  His neighbor happened to be a guy who is in a wheelchair.  Not married.  No kids.  But quite often he’d have friends over to his house and they’d play cards and drink beer.  And one of those friends would always bring his 10-year-old son with him.  That’s not a great environment for a ten year-old kid.

And this kid would often wander over to my brother’s house; my brother’s one son was 10 at that time also.  And Ben, my nephew, would play with Justin.  Well, a week or so before the scheduled VBS, he wandered over, and my sister-in-law asked Justin how his mom was doing.  And Justin said, (these are his words), “Oh, she flipped out, she’s in the hospital.”  The next time he was over at their home, again Karla asked how his mom was doing and this time he said, “She’s still in the hospital but she doesn’t have to get surgery or anything, she just needs to talk to the doctors.”

Well, VBS was coming up, and for some reason Karla thought about Justin.  She didn’t know his last name.  She didn’t know his parents’ name.  But she walked over to the neighbor found out what their names were and got their telephone number and called that dad and asked if Justin could come to VBS with Ben.  He said yes and brought Justin over.

When he got there he said things were rough at their home right then, with his wife in the hospital, and he kept saying, “Thank you so much for thinking about Justin.  This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for us.  No one has ever shown any interest in Justin.  Thank you.”  And he didn’t just say that once, he kept saying it.

So Karla took Justin to VBS and he was an absolute pistol.  This was a kid who had never, not in his entire life, been in church.  He was one of those kids who just kind of bounced off the walls and you didn’t think anything was getting through.  In fact, Karla had to go with him everywhere he went because he was so disruptive.  When the VBS director said they were going to have a pop can drive.  Justin shouted out at the top of his lungs.  “Oh boy, I’ve got all kinds of beer cans at home!”

Karla really thought nothing was getting through to Justin.  And then one night as she took him home to his dad, she heard Justin say to his dad, “Dad, I learned tonight I can pray for Mom.  And you can pray for Mom too.  Can we pray together, Dad?”

You see, Karla thought she was just being nice by taking an unruly little boy to VBS.  That’s not what was going on – she was being an instrument being used for noble purposes.

You just never know what will happen when you have made Jesus Christ the Lord of your life and you possess a willingness to listen, a willingness to learn, and willingness to be available.

Are there any Justins you know, that you could invite to VBS?

Are there any Justins you’re willing to invest your time and effort into (I know you’ll be tired after working all day)?

Are there any Justins you know, who are just pistols and you really don’t think anything would ever get through, but really need to know Jesus?

I really am expecting God to move in a great way during the week of VBS.

Have you started praying yet?

Have you thought of whom you’ll invite yet?

You and I are called to be an instrument for noble purposes.  Have you placed yourself in His hands so He can use you?
