Good Moanin’ Springfieldians,

Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed this Saturday, March 10th, you would hate to be late or miss worship this coming Sunday.

If you didn’t notice anything wrong with the above sentence, read it again.

Read it very slowly….Did you catch the mistake?

“Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed this Saturday, March 10th, you would hate to be late or miss worship this coming Sunday.”

You see if you simply think that what happens at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays in the sanctuary of the church is worship, you’re mistaken.

Anyone can walk into a church’s sanctuary, sing the songs, bow their head when others pray, throw a few bucks into the offering plate as its passed by, and listen to some guy stand in front of everyone and speak about God – none of that is truly worship.

Worship isn’t what happens outwardly, worship is all about what’s going on inwardly. Remember what Jesus said to the Samaritan woman, “True worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.” (John 4:23 NIV)

When Jesus was asked what was the greatest command His response, His answer, I believe, is a great definition of worship.

He said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew22:37-39 NIV)

You understand outward actions are only worship if they are a reflection of the inward reality of our authentic love for the Lord.

So is singing with great gusto, arms raised heavenward, tears rolling down our face worship?

I don’t know, you tell me. Do you love the Lord with all your heart soul, mind, and strength? How about do you love Him with all your time, all your resources (money), and in all your relationships?

Is stopping to change the tire of someone while your on your way to church, which makes you late or maybe even miss the worship gathering – is that worship?

I don’t know; did you stop because you love your neighbor as your self?

Worship – authentic worship, heart-felt worship, this deep love for God that must be expressed outwardly, and is absolutely foundational if we’re going to build a life of significance.

What will you do this coming Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (if you remember to move your clocks forward)?

Will you be worshipping?  Will the way you sing, pray, give, listen, and respond – be a reflection of your love for the Lord?

And what about tomorrow and the next day, and the next – when you’re at work, when you’re dealing with kids or unforeseen problems – will you handle the stuff of life in a worshipful manner?
